Nook

Today was a good day

Today was such a fantastic day.  I was awakened by cute kids, hugs, kisses and cuddles.  After getting dressed the girls played Wii Music which is one of their favorite games.  Shockingly there is quite a bit of musical instruction as well as fun.  So yay! music class right off the bat.  While they did that I made my famous mommy oatmeal because isn’tevery moms oatmeal the best?  We eat ours with honey, cinnamon and sausage or as they were know when I was a little girl “bear’s ears.”  My Dad can be quite the joker.  How do you eat yours?

After breakfast we pulled out all of our printouts and books over to the dining room table and got right to work.  I think it took us an hour to cover Math, Language, Reading and Whining.  What’s that? Whining is not an official curriculum choice? Hmmm I think someone better tell that to the girls.  At this point they started to whine and gripe and huff and puff and I swear there was a little pointyness and fur sprouting on their ears.  However the only thing that tried to blow the house down was Tropical Storm Hermine and he more tried to flood us out.  I realized at this point that a change of tactics was in order and we all moved to the couch for  cuddles and story reading.  This is when I realized something more was going on.  They began to switch from school kids to my kids and started telling me they were feeling sick!  They had slight fevers and just felt pitiful and snocky so it was pj’s, robes and soft blankies all around.

We curled up and I started to read them LilMiss’ assigned reading, Children of Odin,  so she grabbed her questions and filled them in as I read.

I would like to stop here and tell you that I believe that every homeschooling family needs an E-reader.

There are so many books out there that no longer have a copyright on them and can be downloaded for free.  Think all the classics and so many other books that are being lost to time that are amazing.  This is one of those books.  I will do another post with all of the links I like tomorrow perhaps.

After reading and discussion it was time for lunch and naps all around.  I find it wonderful that even though they were sick we got in a whole day of work in just a few hours and got in lots of cuddling and bonding as well.  When they were feeling yucky like this and had to come home from public school they were missing out on lessons there and were so drained from having to fight and fake it all day they were just a wreck.  I like this much better.  I am also anticipating that since they were able to rest they will be better quickly and ready to go on our field trip Friday.  Even though I missed out on a co-op planning meeting and hanging out with my friends we had a good day.

The Saga of the Nook

Ever since Barnes and Noble sent out their first press release I have been longing for a nook.  I squashed that desire deep down since I just could not see spending that much on an ereader when I also love printed books the way I do.  I love nothing better than to go to a thrift store and dig or to a bookstore and browse.  I seem to hear the books like something out of Inkheart!  It is love I tell you! Now lurking inside me is huge gadget lover but there is also this thrifty little voice that quite frequently says things such as  “do they really think I am going to pay that much, they must be crazy!” and the like.  So now we come to the point of my little story.   On a whim I bought my incredibly hard to buy for husband a Nook for Father’s Day.  He spends a lot of time at work waiting around and loves to read so I thought that he might enjoy it.  I could see spending money on it for him because he would use it far more than I ever could and would never have to worry about being without a book again.  He was very excited when we presented it to him and has not been seen without it nearby since.  He finds it handy to keep books on hand and it fits into his lunch bag or motorcycle backpack  much better than the thick scifi/fantasy books he typically reads.  He liked it so much I never even really got my hands on it and was expressly forbidden from contaminating it with my girlie books.  He thought everyone at work that keeps looking at it would never let him live down some vampire novel.  He was probably right but I hear quite a few of them are True Blood Fans so maybe my Sookie Stackhouse might not have gone amiss.  As you know the day after Father’s Day they came out with the Nook Wifi which is so much cheaper and at that point I couldn’t stand it any longer my Nook lust took over and  I too had to have a Nook.   This past weekend I went and picked mine up.  Ahh Heaven!  It does not replace books but is satisfying in a whole other way.  What that way is can be a bit hard to describe but ooo it is lovely.  The only thing that bothered me at first was the way it flashes when you turn the page but I quickly became used to it just as we already do with printed books.  It will not be replacing print books for me anytime soon considering there are 8 on my nightstand and a small mountain under it but it definitely holds a special place in my library.  I mean come on its my 2 favorite things!  A book and and a gadget.  Toss in a bit of chocolate and a drink and you may never see me again.

Behold my new love
